Memphis, TN is known around the world for it’s Bar B Que. In Memphis, unlike most other cities, the term Bar B Que is usually meant to refer to piles of pulled pork smothered with spicy BBQ sauce layered between two buns. Visitors to the Bluff City are often encouraged to eat at one of our many BBQ restaurants during their stay and one of those restaurants, Corky’s, has even made quite a business out of freezing and shipping their products around the globe.
But don’t be mistaken – just because you might be “Walking in Memphis,” doesn’t necessarily mean every BBQ sandwich you try here will be something to write home about. Char and I have found three places for the best Bar B Que in Memphis: The Germantown Commissary, Jim and Nick’s, and Tom’s BBQ. Almost everyone in the Memphis area has heard of The Germantown Commissary and Jim and Nick’s. Tom’s BBQ is not quite so well know. Char had been raving to me about Tom’s ever since we were first married and we finally went together for lunch this past July. I had just returned from my annual physical with my doctor. I was found to be in good health so I figured I could go ahead and eat a plate full of cholesterol.
The first thing I noticed at Tom’s BBQ was that the Food Network’s Guy Fieri (host of “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives”) had beat us to this place. Tom’s BBQ was featured on the hit show for the “Memphis BBQ Tour” episode.
Tom’s is famous for their rib tips – which we tried, of course – but we also sampled many other treats created in Adam’s kitchen. I am not a fan of bologna – neither is Char – but when the owner brings you out of plate of something he calls his specialty, we can’t refuse. Adam’s barbecued bologna turned out to be a surprise hit with us. So much so that I am craving some right now as I type this review.
Tom’s menu is cock-full of Southern BBQ goodness available in sandwiches or plates. Pork & beef, wings, ribs, bologna, sausage, and even catfish – all at reasonable prices – make this corner BBQ joint a popular lunch destination for both blue and white collar patrons.
Tom’s also offers whole shoulders, rib tips & BBQ by the pound, and event catering. Whether you’re a visitor to Memphis and looking for authentic Memphis BBQ or a local wanting to try the competition, give Tom’s a shot!
Tom’s is located at 4087 New Getwell Rd (at the intersection of Getwell and Raines) not far from the Mississippi State Line.
