Louis and Char get ready for their arm wrestling rematch
Louis and Char get ready for their arm wrestling rematch

Three months after Char and I fought to a draw in our now famous Battle of the Sexes Arm Wrestling Competition, we stepped up to the table to face off again.  The first match became more popular than we ever imagined with our readers.  The original blog post and video on our website has received over 2,500 visitors in the first three months and the YouTube version of the video has attracted over 15,000 views in the same time period.  We’ve had many of you comment on this site encouraging us in the rematch and giving us your feedback about the last match.  The post was so popular that we even turned it into an online comic book.

We ran another reader poll asking you to vote on who you thought would win the rematch.  As of today, Char clearly had you convinced.  She won the poll with a final tally of 108-45, with 15 of you thinking we’d end up in another draw.

With most of the readers cheering for Char to win (a big thank you to Johnnie and Aliya for publicly rooting for me!), I decided to kick it up a notch.  I guaranteed my victory in the rematch.

So….  after all this time, finally, the Battle of the Sexes Arm Wrestling Rematch between Char and I was on!  Before we get into the videos of the event and the outcome,  I’ve got a few more words of reflection (like last time) on why we think this post has become so popular.

Char looks confident heading into the match.
Char looks confident heading into the match.

1.  As I stated last time, it is a mixed gender arm wrestling competition

Let’s face it – had I just simply won last time, you’d probably not care so much to see the rematch.  Why is it that Char’s fans and cheerleaders are outnumbering my own by a ratio of about 100 to 1?  Simple.  It’s a mixed arm wrestling match – man vs. woman – and the level of competition is fairly equal on both sides of the table, making the match extraordinarily close and exciting.

2.  Char and I are competitive… but we are also best friends and have a great marriage

When people have competitive natures, I must say they are simply fun to watch in action.  But when the two competitors are best friends – or moreover, husband and wife – and they can intensely compete in an amicable manner, then they bring all the passion and respect of their relationship into the competition.

These are my thoughts at least.  So…. without further delay…  here’s what happened when Char and I faced off in the rematch….

Before we began, Char and I decided it would be fun to both take a moment to film ourselves saying what we really thought the outcome of the rematch would be.  Not over-confident trash talk but what we really thought would happen…  Here are our predictions:

Watch Char and Louis predict who will win the rematch (10.4 MB MP4 file)

SO – with that covered, what really did happen?

The Left Arm: Char won the left arm in our last match after a relatively short struggle and this time, it was pretty much the same story.  After losing with the left arm, I realized that my guarantee of victory would come up short.  It seemed like this was going to be a repeat of our first competition… another draw…

The Right Arm: By the way, both Char and I are right handed.  I won the right arm last time and fully expected to do the same in this rematch.  It was a long struggle on the right arm the last time and in the end, Char just couldn’t hold up.  So you can imagine my surprise this time when Char gained an early advantage and after a short period, just finished me off and won the competition.

So the Battle of the Sexes Arm Wrestling Rematch ended with Char taking the victory.  I was completely surprised but it was a fair match from what I can tell.  I’ll be reviewing the videos to make sure. 😉  But Char’s not getting off the hook that easy.  She’s giving me a rematch in July.  So stay tuned to see how all this turns out.  Next time, I WILL BE more prepared for her.

Until then, we’ve got a LOT of other competitions planned for The Traveling Twosome.  You keep reading – and we’ll keep competing!  We’ll be recording another episode of our radio show podcast this week and I’m sure we’ll talk about this match and what’s coming next as well!  If you haven’t subscribed via iTunes, do so here!

Congrats to Char for the easy win. You really deserved it.

@Louis: By comparing your upper body and hers, it’s very obvious that she’s the winner in armwrestling. Her arms are bigger and better defined than yours. You shouldn’t have guaranteed your victory just because you thought she was a woman. But no need to worry about anything. She’s a strong woman and can beat many men including myself in armwrestling. So stay cool with the fact that your wife is stronger than you. To give you some hopes, it’s not always about the strength. Sometimes skills are more important than strength. For example, I think you can take care of her in a wrestling match, as I think you’ve had more wrestling experience. So if you schedule for a wrestling match in future, I would vote for you.

    Keep up the good work.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Kim, And THAT’S why I wanted the rematch right away – I didn’t get how she won it so easily. Looking back at the video, she did use her upper body (which was fair, I suppose) and I was using just my arm. In July, I think she’ll be just as surprised as I was last night… stay tuned…

Steve, ok – I have to admit… Char did deserve the win. Last night was hers… but I just can’t help thinking that I didn’t bring my all to the match. It was too easy for her as compared to the last match. But anyway…. believe me, my head is held high – no pouting going on over here. 🙂 I’m cool with Char winning (as long as she’s not cheating! LOL)

Char – I’m bracing myself for all your fans pouring it in on me now… good grief. lol

Well. Char proved that she is STRONG. (Also, she looks great in that colorful, strapless, feminine top. But I digress.) You let me down Louis, and I was one of your few fans. Good matches! I commend you both.

Now, camera angle made it difficult to tell about the technique. I wish the camera had been at a right angle to the table, instead of looking over Louis’s shoulder.

I think Louis was centered, STRAIGHT across from Char on both matches.

For the left-handed match, Char started out with her body, most obviously her legs, TURNED sharply to the right, in the direction she wanted to push.

For the right-handed match her position was different. Because of the camera angle, I can not tell for sure, but I think for the right-handed match, Char TURNED her body to the left, again, the direction she wanted to push. I think that by turning in the direction she wanted to go, Char gave herself an advantage. I’m not criticizing Char. If she knew, consciously or instinctively, how to get an advantage, that is to her credit.

Also, I’m not sure that the matches started with your hands in the center of the table. Again, the camera makes it hard to tell. But I think your hands started out closer to Char, at least in the right-hand match. If not, she succeeded in pulling Louis’s arm toward her.

I think that’s the way it works: You don’t PUSH your opponent’s arm directly down. First, you must PULL their hand toward you, extending their arm, and then twist your torso ever so slightly to get your weight behind your arm, and continue PULLING THEIR hand toward you as you also press it down. Again, good technique by Char.

Technique aside, I think Char won by brute strength. Technique is interesting, but I think the strongest person wins.

Louis, my man, if you want to be more prepared next time, I think you need to do some serious weight training. I’m still with you.

John – Char did indeed have her body turned! She was following the advice from another reader, Coach Tiff, who mentioned that this gives one an advantage! I FORGOT TO DO THAT! OK, I think I’m building my confidence back for when we go at it again in July!

Richard, you need to watch both the first competition and this rematch a bit more closely. In the first time I faced her, we did tie. And this time (as my supporter John pointed out) she angled herself and I didn’t. That’s to her credit – she deserved to win the rematch as she did a better job and I forgot to angle myself to get the same advantage she had. So I’ll give Char credit where it’s due. But to think I need to just give up? Please! I don’t even think Char would be THAT confident…. Char? 😉

Oh – thanks for reading, though, Richard.

Char, you really did your homework on this one. Louis, don’t feel bad, she did out muscle you but she also used really good technique. In the name of fairness I have to let Louis in on your little edge. Look at your grip in both matches Louis. see how Char was higher on your hand and kept her wrist solid/ straight? Char also twisted your wrist back and away from your body. This cut your bicep strength considerably. A note for both of you, the farther your hand is from your shoulder, the weaker your pull will be.
Now that I have been unbiased with my advice, I have to reveal one either fact…Char I was routing for you and hope to see you win again, lol. (sorry Louis but a pretty woman always wins my supportt)
I really enjoyed this one and think it is great how you compete with all your hearts but still keep it friendly and fun. (So Char, how did you train for this?)- peace

Jester….. thanks for the kind comment. 🙂 However, Shhhhhhhh, you’re not supposed to share my golden secrets!! LOL Ehhh, it’s OK though. I’m quite confident that I can win again and again and again. I actually didn’t train for this at all. In fact, I am at my weakest strength ever right now. *grin* I only wish I was at my strength from long ago.

Louis…honey….. imagine this….. You 12, me 16 (yes folks, I am the older one)….. me smackin’ you down in boxing and wrestling, out running you in track, showing you up in weight training…. Now THAT is quite a thought!! LOL THAT would have been hilarious!! You would have tried chasing me down, I would have run and jumped onto a tree limb and climbed to the top while sticking my tongue out and laughing. Can you be 12 again and I be 16??? Oh how I dream what that would have been like!!

First of all, Char did a great job and she deserved winning.

Louis: to be honest, Char has stronger biceps and she will win all arm-wrestling rematches. However, i believe Louis you are stronger than Char overall (i mean your body is stronger than hers). If i were you, i will take revenge by challenging aher to a wrestling match. In a wrestling match, it doesn’t matter much the strength of the biceps; it is the skills and the strength of the body overall that matters. I am sure that you Louis will win.

Char: you are beautiful and strong woman; but i have to support my fellow man =D; and i am sure that Louis will beat you in a fair and competitive wrestling match 😉 (your strong biceps won’t be enough to beat him :p).

Thank you Louis and Char for sharing your stories. I really enjoyed surfing your website so much. Keep it up!

Don’t tell Char I said this but, um, I need all the encouragement I can get going up against her… 🙂 Oh, and one more thing.. we’re both very glad you are enjoying going through all our website posts. Too cute, guys! What a fun couple! Okay, the surprise on Louis’ part after losing is just priceless. Begging for a rematch? LOL

The right arm was actually all stamina. Looks like both of you were struggling on that one but Char just wore Louis down after a while. The left arm, Louis didn’t stand a chance there.

I’m curious, Louis, how do you plan on preparing yourself for the next match? It’ll take a lot to beat her.

For those of you who suggest wrestling: That would be great fun! However, I believe that women often have MORE strength in their legs than their arms. Just my opinion.

For a fairly definitive test of strength, I would suggest a bench-press competition to see who can bench press the most weight. Of course, this one could definitely go to the one who trains the most diligently.

  • April 19, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Donna – my priceless surprise, eh? Well I’m glad I was able to make your day. As for how I plan on preparing myself before the next match, don’t tell Char but I am certainly going to be lifting with my left arm. I can win the right arm if I focus but the left arm will take some conditioning. Again, don’t tell Char… Um, whoops, is this thing public? 🙂

Johnnie – not sure I get your point on the legs comment. Are you suggesting that I’d have more advantage or less advantage in wrestling considering the leg factor? Just curious. I think Char has something to say about this as well… I’ll let her respond…

  • April 20, 2010 at 4:05 am
    Permalink

I agree with Johnnie that wrestling would be great fun and I also agree that women have more strength in their legs.
Louis: this means that your chances of winning a wrestling match against Char are much lower than winning an arm-wrestling match 😀
So it is a good idea for you to prepare just for arm-wrestling because Char will dominate you in a wrestling match 😀

Sorry Louis, i am supporting the pretty and the strong lady, CHAR!!!

Char would have him pinned inside of 10 – 15 seconds in a true, competitive wrestling match. Stronger arms and legs, a height advantage, and a confident attitude. He wouldn’t last. My boyfriend wrestled in high school and I’ve seen enough matches to know how it works and can predict the winner almost every time.

Jack2….. tsk, tsk, tsk. For shame on you man! *shakes head in disbelief* LOL

Haven’t you ever heard that a woman has much stronger legs than a man? It’s the truth. Wresting uses your upper AND lower body combined! Without a good strong solid base (that’s the lower) your upper body doesn’t stand much of a chance! They work as a team. Imagine your solid base being sand and mine being a rock. You are going to slip and slide and sink while my body is on firm ground! My upper body doesn’t have to struggle keeping my lower body afloat. Yours does.

See now, my friend? Do you see where your words must be eaten? LOL

Jack2, you didn’t go there, I know! Wrestling is a “man’s sport” and “show Char who is the stronger sex”??? You want to retract those comments, perhaps? I think Char showed Louis who was stronger when she beat him at arm wrestling! We had co-ed wrestling when I was in school and while the girls didn’t wrestle the guys in wrestling meets between schools, they did practice together within our school at practices and try outs. I have seen girls win both by points and also by pinning their opponent. I stand by my comment that Char would beat Louis in a true, by-the-rules wrestling match within seconds. You must be thinking of television wrestling or something. In real wrestling, it’s all about skill anyway, not just who is stronger. The twosome should get a coach to go over the rules and ref a match between them playing by the rules! Char would win easily.

Lynn, thanks for the offer but I’m sure there is a coach or PE teacher or someone qualified who lives a little closer to our neck of the woods. 2000 miles is a bit far to drive just for me to show Char she doesn’t have the skills to beat me. 😉

Ummmmmmmm, WHAT SAY YOU BOY?????? I KNOW you didn’t GO THERE!! No, not you! You’re way too smart for that!!! Am I right? Did I read wrong??

Let me just say darling….. you have met your match in EVERYTHING! I shall NEVER allow you to win! I am waaaaaay toooooooo superwoman/wonderwoman for that!! *wink* So, sweetheart! I’d be VERY CAREFUL if I were you! Watch your words or once again, as you have recently had to do, you will indeed have to eat’em.

    Not sayin’…. just sayin’! *smile*

Oh, and BTW, I LOVE YOU!!!!!

Char, oh bride of mine, you see… I think you are the one confusing (in the words of our reader, Stacy, above) television wrestling with actual regulated sport. That’s why I speak with such confidence. I can see it now — I’d be playing by all the rules… you’d go find a chair to throw on my head or something… you’d be disqualified… I’d win. 🙂

On this do I hang my confidence in such a statement. Oh, and BTW, I love you, too! 😉

Come on! Stop teasing everyone. Are you going to really try your hand at the sport or are you joking? And no I’m not talking about television stupidity. I think we’re all talking about real competitive / olympic style.

Kyle, hmmmmmm. I gotta say the idea is intriguing. Kind of like those shows like Dirty Jobs where someone gets to experience something new and learn about what others do. Here’s how I could see it working: Char and I spend an afternoon with someone who really knows what he / she is doing (such as a real college wrestling coach), video our education, etc., and do it as an “experience.” I must say, that could be fun. Dirty Jobs has always been one of my favorite shows – I’m seeing that kind of format. Training followed by us giving it a try.

And as for the style…. I agree – No invites from WWF type people, please. If we do this, it’ll be the real way. I think Char and I are a little old to put on spandex and act like fools. Wait a minute… on second thought…. LOL

  • April 22, 2010 at 9:32 pm
    Permalink

LOL – Now I’m sitting here rolling on the floor laughing. I’m picturing us taking this very seriously with a real coach like I mentioned before – but the whole time Char and I would be in WWF style garb. I wonder if we could keep a straight face. Too funny!

  • April 22, 2010 at 9:48 pm

There you go again! So are you doing it or not? Really???

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:02 pm
    Permalink

Dude – we’ve answered haven’t we? Yes, we’re serious. We’re being funny because we are always always funny – but sure, we’d certainly be up for doing a Traveling Twosome post / video where we both go to an actual wrestling coach for training and then try our new skills out. Like I said, in the format of Dirty Jobs. We just need to locate a coach, a gymnasium floor, and a mat.

In fact, I can see a whole series of posts in this vein. After wrestling, we could try other things such as riding mechanical bulls, going skeet shooting, working in a coal mine…. ok, maybe not the coal mine. 🙂

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:08 pm
    Permalink

Ohhhhhhhhh, I am soooooooooooooooo going to ride a mechanical bull!!!! I need a cowgirl hat and some cute cowgirl boots, brown preferred!! I have ALWAYS wanted to do that!!!! LOL Seriously!!!!

Working in a coal mine?? Ummmmm, that could be dirty!!! LOL I would LOVE to but my asthma wouldn’t like you very much me thinks. *wink* But I could act out “The Coal Miners Daughter” and you could rub coal soot all over my face instead!!

Skeet shooting…… What up Geet? Wanna skeet?? Ummmm, OK, I guess!!

As far as the wrestling is concerned. I’ll tell you what. I’m game BUT…. and you better take this BUT in careful consideration….. YOU MUST WEAR THOSE LEOTARD THINGAMAJIGGY’S!!!! STRIPED preferred!!! Deal??

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:15 pm
    Permalink

OK people – I think we’re really going to do this series of posts. I’m thinking we need to have you – our readers – give us ideas of what these “dirty jobs” and “competitive experiences” might be. In fact… that’s our current month’s contest! Give us your idea of what you want to see us do at our contest page and you can even win an iTunes Gift Card and FREE MUSIC just for giving us your idea (and we might just take your idea on as well!)

Char, my love, I was joking about the coal mining. But a mechanical bull competition, skeet shooting, and (of course) the wrestling are a done deal. But NO – I repeat – NO. There will be no leotard thingamajiggys. I don’t want our readers to go blind.

So… do we have a willing coach in our readership?

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:16 pm
    Permalink

Wait!!! Without the leotard I am not so much inclined to agree!!! I simply MUST see you in a striped one!!! I HAVE TO!!! It would be the FUNNIEST thing I have ever seen!!! If I agree to wear one will you??? ROFLOL

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:20 pm
    Permalink

No – I see your gimmick here. See, I’m taking this seriously! We go to a coach, get trained for real in an afternoon, and then give it a go! If we’re wearing those ridiculous costumes, we’ll be laughing too hard to be serious!

Hmmmm – ok – tell you what. On second thought… You’re a crafty clothes and costume maker – why don’t you make us two ridiculous outfits and we’ll do it both ways. Once to see who really wins – and once in the costumes to make our readers fall out laughing. All for the ratings, you know? OK – you’re on…

Do we have a coach in the house????

  • April 22, 2010 at 10:22 pm
    Permalink

I’ll find us a coach. I got LOTS of peeps!!! Dont you worry your little head about it.

And BTW, I will make leotards but yours is going to be bright hot pink or orange and white striped! Fair??

Poor Kyle is going to wonder again if we’re really serious now. Poor Kyle.

Oh, and forget hot pink and orange with white stripes like they had in the 80s… how about me wearing white long johns a la Andy Kaufman? Makes sense to me!

I think reading about you performing a variety of jobs and challenges would be a fun series of posts on your site. Great idea! Hope you find a coach soon and get this started! Coach T – I know you probably have the experience to do this for us – but I want an unbiased referee! You’ve already made it clear you’d be on Char’s side!

Pauline – I agree – it’s going to be a fun series of posts. Can’t wait to get them started! After the arm wrestling rematch, I’m feeling reluctant to “guarantee my victory” but let’s just say I think I’ll have no problems winning this one. We shall see!

Jim – Well, Florida sounds great but it’s a bit far to travel when I’m sure there will be offers from coaches and schools closer to Memphis. If you want to spring for the trip, however, Char and I are there… otherwise….

Any closer-to-Memphis area coaches or schools? Want some publicity? Showcase your school’s athletic department? 🙂

Oh – and Jim – WHAT???!!!?? You think CHAR would win? WHY do you say that???

Louis, my darling. Jim says I will win because he is obviously a VERY WISE MAN! *smile* I believe when I gave you just a taste of a wrestling tackle the other evening I showed you I hold no mercy. Be afraid, my dear husband. Be very afraid. *grin*

Char, I do believe I was laying back on the couch already when started that “tackle.” I also question whether or not it was a move that will be legal when we’re refereed. And all this is before I get to spend the afternoon in training anyway… considering all this… not afraid, not afraid… 😉

Louis, I say that because of what I see in the videos. For instance, in the arm wrestling rematch, you look like you’re sitting down to play cards. But Char quickly got in the ready stance and angled herself for the best advantage. Wrestling is got a lot to do with positioning yourself for quick moves that take your opponent down. She is obviously not weak so once she makes her move and has you down, I don’t think you’ll be able to break out of her pin. Just think what happened at arm wrestling, now think about her doing that to all of you, not just your arm.

  • April 26, 2010 at 6:41 am
    Permalink

Char you really should have given him another shot when he was begging for a rematch again. Can you imagine his face after you give him another chance and he still loses to you?

Jim – now that you’ve pointed out my flaw I’ll be sure to be prepared for both the wrestling as well as the July arm wrestling rematch. Thank you! 🙂

Yvonne – I must admit, that was pretty pathetic of me. I think I might have to go edit that part out of the video…

Char – Go ahead and let Jim’s comment make you over-confident heading into the wrestling match. It will be your shortcoming (as me how I know). 😉

Well I tried my best but I couldn’t beat my ultra competitive husband. We did have a blast doing it though! Char, you made it look easier than it was. I’ve seen guys fool around and let their girlfriend or wife win on purpose but I’ve never seen a real match like this where the girl wins because she was the stronger of the two. I wouldn’t have guessed that Char would have really won this match but now I’m not even sure I could beat her! Louis dont feel bad, this doesn’t make you look bad it juts shows how strong your wife is. Do you do other competitions like this?

Hey, Bethany! You were a good sport to give it a try. I wish you would send Char and Louis a video for them to post of your husband winning, just to make us guys feel a little better.

Louis & Char! You two are born showpeople! You would be a hit on Letterman. Or Oprah. Or maybe you could produce your own reality show. Sounds to me like your entire life is a reality show! Please remember me, Louis, when you are rich and famous.

Leotards sound OK to me, but it doesn’t really matter. Simple T-shirts and gym shorts would be perfectly fine. But please don’t turn this compelling drama into a farce with stripes and weird colors. No wacky costumes! This is a serious matter.

The wrestling lesson from a qualified coach is obviously a good idea. Louis, I’m sending you as much positive energy as I can generate, but it’s time for us to face the truth. What guys like us need is serious weight training.

Johnnie, I think these two already have a reality show. It’s called THE TRAVELING TWOSOME! I think Louis and Char are the first online reality show! Cool! LOL! If you haven’t heard them, listen to their podcasts.

Johnnie – I can’t tell you how many people tell Char and I that very thing. Not the leotard part, but the Letterman / reality show part. 🙂

Cathy – You’re so right! The Traveling Twosome is our reality show! We’re about to celebrate the first anniversary of The Traveling Twosome in a few weeks. We’re planning a big event in Tupelo, MS – the site of the very first Traveling Twosome post. Lots of great posts that week and some great give-a-ways being planned. We might even be holding our wrestling match that week! We’ll keep you posted!

And who knows – in one year, we’ve gone from just text and a few pictures on a post to videos, a podcast radio show on iTunes, monthly contests and giveaways, fake commercials, a YouTube Channel, etc. Perhaps our second year will host a monthly internet TV show. The idea is intriguing! Stay tuned as the ideas turn into reality….

But if you ordered this as a custom video from us, I’m sure she’d oblige. See here: Traveling Twosome Custom Videos
